Almost 200 years of peace and stability
During the Viking Age and the early Middle Ages Sweden expanded eastwards and Finland was conquered. Thereafter came the centuries dominated by the Hanseatic League and its cultural and political influences from the south. From 1560 and 100 years on, land was conquered again, rich provinces round the Baltic, which were then lost in 100 years of wars, Finland was lost 1809. Since 1814 Sweden has lived in peace within secure borders.
