Sundsvall (Map code: 17H xx)
(ab. 100.000 inh.) Founded in the 17th century at a small watercourse between the mouths of two big rivers, later used for timber floating, the city boomed from the middle of the 19th century with the rapid growth of saw-mill- and later also pulp and paper-industries in the district. It developed into a centre of international importance for the forest industry. In 1879 Sundsvall was the scene of the first serious strike conflict in Sweden among sawmill workers. In1888 fire destroyed the wooden city. The wealthy industrialists and citizens (forest barons) made a reconstruction possible to a city of 5-6 storeyed stone-buildings in a rectangular street pattern with a broad tree-planted boulevard in the middle, giving Sundsvall a unique big-city-character (Stenstaden). The best architects in Sweden were employed. Cultural institutions and a university college are new developments in the old industrial centre. Map Source: Lantmäteriet (Swedish National Landsurvey) |
