Stockholm (Map code: 10I NO)
Stockholm - since the middle of the 16th century capital of Sweden - was founded around 1250 on an island at the outlet of Lake Mlaren into the Baltic. There the Old Town (bottom of map) maintains its medieval street pattern and buildings mainly from 13th-18th centuries. Three periods of urban growth have left their imprint on the townscape in ever widening rings around the Old Town. In the 17th century when Stockholm became the capital of a Baltic empire (population growth from c. 10 000 to c. 60 000, the period 1850-1930 (railway, industrialisation (population growth from 100 000 in 1850 to 500 000 in 1920) and the post WWII era with rapid post-industrial urbanisation (Greater Stockholm now has ab. 1 600 000 inhabitants). Private service firms dominate employment in Stockholm today with a strong IT-sector.

The green area next to the central city in the map is part of old royal hunting ground with summer palaces, today a "national city park" including Stockholm university and the Royal Institute of Technology.
