Sollerön (Map code: 14E SO)
Lake Siljan area in Dalarna (‘Dalecarlia’) is favoured by good soils formed from calcareous deposits. The lake itself is part of the so-called ‘Siljan Ring’. an immense meteorite crater dating back to upper devonian. The surface of Siljan (although regulated as magazine for hydroelectric power stations) corresponds to the level o f the highest shoreline in this part of the country. The lake is surrounded by old farmland. As a result of a local inheritance system the cultivated land has been extremely split up into narrow parcels. Large villages with red timbered houses in seemingly no organised order developed through centuries. The small arable fields are surrounded by extensive meadowland, often on hillsides and complementary land use in the form of shealings. Extensive forest land today forms the economic backbone of the villages beside tourism. The island of Sollerön has rich vegetation around a traditional church village. Numerous ancient monuments bear witness of the prehistoric roots of settlements among them graveyards from Viking age (800-1050 AD). The island is famous for its traditional boat building, the long ‘church-boats’ being characteristic to Siljan through centuries and now doing service in tourism.
