Malmö (Map code: 2C SV)
(ab.250.000 inh.) Malmö, third biggest city in Sweden, has medieval origin as a market place, first dominated by the Hanseatic league. Around 1500 it had grown to the second biggest city in Denmark, to which the province of Skåne belonged until 1658. Some renaissance buildings from the 16th century give character to the city center. The Old town with partly medieval street pattern and Malmöhus castle is surrounded by a moat, a rest of strong fortifications. Since the 18th century the harbour has developed to an important industrial location and ferry jetty with direct access to the Central railway station. Outside the Old town the city expanded from the 19th century in urban sprawl into the surrounding fertile agricultural plain. Since the year 2000 Malmö is connected with Copenhagen by the Öresund bridge. A new university college has succeeded a former big shipyard in the harbour area. The city is surrounded by a network of motorways. Malmö is the seat of the provincial government of Skåne and cultural institutions of regional importance, theater, museums etc. Map Source: Lantmäteriet (Swedish National Landsurvey) |
