Urban example: Lund

Lund (Map code: 2C NO)
(ab. 100.000 inh.)
A bishopric was established in Lund in 1060 and little later the cathedral was founded, the most important romanesque church in Sweden. In 1104 the church province of the Nordic countries was separated from the diocese of Bremen with the bishop of Lund (until 1658 in Denmark) as archbishop. At the beginning of the 14th century Lund had 27 churches and 8 monasteries. Reformation left little behind. The cathedral grammar school from the 13th century was maintained. In 1668 the university was established to strengthen the Swedish control of the provinces conquered from Denmark 1658. University institutions are totally dominating the north east quarter of the city with its administrative centre close to the cathedral. The medieval core of the city is still visible in the street patterns centred upon the cathedral and some medieval buildings. With the arrival of the railway in the 1850s the industrial development began. Modern industry grows out of R&D; in close co-operation between business and university. TetraPak and Gambro are industries of international importance.
