Karesuando (Road map, sheet 8)
Karesuando, 250 km north of the Polar Circle is the northernmost church village in Sweden. Its location at the Muonio river is close to the border to Finland, established when Sweden lost Finland to Russia 1809. Also the land on the Swedish side of the border had been colonised by Finns since the 17th century (see names of lakes and rivers). The flat landscape is tundra-like with vast boglands and mountain birch forests. With a vegetational season of merely 100-110 days and snow cover twice as many days, still the place has a botanical garden! The village belongs administratively to Kiruna municipality. 185 km of roads through wilderness connects the place with the central place, Kiruna.
