Road network, 2001

THE ROAD NETWORK AND ROAD WORK
The total length of the Swedish road network is about 420,000 km; some 280,000 km of these roads are private roads that carry about 4 % of the total road traffic. Municipal streets and roads amount to about 39,000 km and the remainder belong to the state road network, which carries about 66 % of the total road traffic. The state road network - the national network - is divided into European roads, other national roads and county roads. It covers the whole of the country and is the responsibility of the National Road Administration, which builds and maintains it.

Some 75 % of all passenger transport is by road
